Royal Enfield applies for US certification of Himalayan

Royal Enfield is gearing up to introduce the Himalayan in the US market. The company has applied for the relevant certifications there. A couple of Himalayans were sent to the US and the response from the people who rode the motorcycle was very much positive, says a Royal Enfield official.

Apart from this positive feedback, the fact that the adventure motorcycle segment is the only growing segment of the US motorcycle market has also persuaded Royal Enfield to consider the launch of the Himalayan. The Himalayan is focused at riders wanting to travel dirt roads, trails and even the well-paved highways.

The India-spec Royal Enfield Himalayan is powered by a 411cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, fuel-injected motor that produces 24.5 HP of power and 32 Nm of torque. This engine is matched to a five-speed gearbox. Considering the rigid and strict regulations in the US market, Royal Enfield might offer ABS for the US-spec Himalayan.

Meanwhile, Royal Enfield’s North American sales have been minuscule when compared to the competition. As a result, the company is now focused on expanding its sales through the 60 dealership network and also introducing newer models.
